Break Dancing Is Now Set To Become an Olympic Sport

Debuting as a medal event at the Paris Games in 2024.

Following the inclusion of skateboarding, surfing, karate, sport climbing and baseball/softball as Olympic sports, the International Olympic Committee has now added break dancing into its medal events program.

Set to debut at the Paris Games in 2024, the interesting move is just the latest in the IOC’s pursuit to captivate a younger audience with “urban events.” To be simply called “Breaking,” getting break dancing to the world stage took almost two years after positive trials at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and passing stages of approval in 2019 with separate decisions from the IOC board and full membership. Breaking will take place at Paris’ downtown venue Place de le Concorde alongside sport climbing and 3-on-3 basketball.

The 2024 Paris Olympics is now set to see a total of 329 medal events with an athlete quota of 10,500, 10 fewer medals and 600 fewer participants than the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games. The IOC notes that its recent decisions are looking toward its future priorities of hitting its long-term target of equal participation by men and women athletes, and more urbanized events.
